MEN'S FOOTCARE: Summer is finally here, and so are the sandals. Feet are often times the last thing men think about when it comes to grooming and taking care of themselves. Bad idea: recent surveys have placed nasty looking feet as a worse turnoff than ear hair, bad breath, or body odor. All men have to take care of their feet, especially during the summertime. My advice?
1. Pedicure: Keep in mind that a large proportion of NYC women take care of their feet with pedicures on a monthly basis. Follow their lead. There is nothing worse for a wife or girlfriend to go out with someone who doesn't put some attention or care into their grooming. Just check out my rules of selecting a nails salon on my post from April 10th.
2. Home treatment: Nail salons not your style? There are a number of things you can do at home for your feet.
a. Scrub your feet: if you have dry or flaky skin it is important to ensure that you refresh that outer layer of skin. Keep your scrub brush somewhere dry to prevent bacteria build up.
b. Trim nails: Trim your nails at least once every 2 weeks. Keep the nails as short as possible without cutting yourself on the sides of the nail. If you have discolored nails then make sure to take a look at my Jan 23 post about toenail fungus.
c. Keep you skin moisturized: This are plenty of moisturizers for active men, but I recommend a product with lactic acid (Lac-Hydrin lotion) or urea (Kerasal cream) for those of you who have especially dry skin. I recommend moisturizing dry heels and feet especially before going to bed.
d. Watch out for smelly feet: You most likely have athlete's foot: aka fungus. My May 1st posting takes care of your questions about this.
e. USE SUNSCREEN: Slathering sunscreen on the rest of your body then getting burned on the top of your feet is not fun when you have to put your work shoes back on. Get that sunscreen (broad spectrum, water resistant, oxybenzone and paraben free), on 30 minutes before you journey outside. By the time you drive or walk to the pool or beach and set your stuff down you may have been exposed to UV rays for over 30 minutes.
Bottom line: Your feet can look great for the summer if you put in a little time to keep them up to the standards of the rest of your grooming.
